Puntland Human Rights Association (PHRA) carried out three days human rights training on 8 – 11 February 2011 in Hotel Muno of Bosaso town. The training is funded by Oxfam Novib. The participants were 32 youth including 19 males and 13 females. The reason that youth are particularly targeted because of they are agent for change and they could contribute advocating of the rights of others and the second objective was, youth have had less opportunity than other social sectors in Puntland and also like other population in Somalia, youth have lost decades of no proper education and subjected to all forms of deprivations. The facilitator of the training was Alinasir Geire.
Mr. Awil Mohamed Ali, Bosaso local government planning officer, opened the training and encouraged the trainees’ participation and active listening during the workshop sessions.
All the invited participants were from universities, colleges, secondary schools, youth led organizations, community based organizations, women NGOs and other civil society members based in coastal town of Bosaso.
The following are topics covered and taught the participants of the workshop Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Convention of rights of Child, African charter of Human and People’s Rights, causes of internal displacement, routine challenges of internal displaced persons, common human rights violations in the IDP Camps, legal and social services of vulnerable and marginalized communities receives, domestic violence and GBV.
It was the first workshop of its kind held in Bosaso since all ministerial authority offices, International NGOs, and UN offices are located in Garowe, thus Puntland Human Rights Association is the only human rights organization have office in Bosaso. We would like to increase such important workshops and training to educate and train the future leaders and advocates the rights of minorities and indigenous communities in Puntland of Somalia.
